Several decades after World War II, the American army primarily relied on guns and mortars for artillery support on the battlefield. However, the increased power of the Soviet Army and the appearance of new generation multiple launch rocket systems, such as the famous "Grad" and "Uragan", required the US Army to significantly increase the firepower of its field artillery. As a result, in the early 1980s, the American and some of their allies' arsenal was equipped with the self-propelled multiple launch rocket system M270 MLRS. Its name, "Multiple Launch Rocket System", became a generic term: today, abroad, all weapon systems of this class are commonly referred to as such. The M270 MLRS, with its high potential for engaging a wide range of targets, was primarily intended for warfare in Europe, where it was meant to enhance the firepower of NATO's non-nuclear artillery and crush the Soviet tank army (its creators often referred to this MLRS as the "soldier's system"). This new book by a renowned military technology expert is the first in domestic literature to provide a detailed account of the history, design, testing, and adoption of the M270 MLRS system, which served as a precursor to the already legendary "HIMARS" rocket systems. The publication is illustrated with numerous photographs.
