Bishop Sergius (Tikhomirov, 1871 - 1945), subsequently Metropolitan Tokyo and Japanese, was the closest assistant to St. Nicholas Japanese, who saw a true missionary in his successor. In one of the letters, St. Nicholas wrote: High-grade Sergius more and more belongs to an excellent missionary. In Japanese, he says so fluently that it says to the sermons with large pagan assemblies and it is perfectly understood and rewarded with applause in Japanese custom. Running notes of Bishop Sergius will open up the modern reader forgotten pages of Russian history and culture, with a genuine expressant of which this wonderful Russian hierarch and missionary.
