Alexander Sergeyevich Griboyedov (1795–1829) was a Russian playwright, diplomat, linguist, and historian, particularly famous for his work "Woe from Wit," which has become a source of many popular phrases still used today. Among his friends, he was renowned for his poetry and parodies. He was esteemed by literary figures such as Alexander Pushkin, Pyotr Vyazemsky, Pyotr Chaadayev, and Faddei Bulgarin, while his literary allies included Pyotr Katenin and Vasily Kukhelbeker. The comedy "Woe from Wit" is a satire on the aristocratic Moscow society of the 19th century, exposing the unnaturalness of its life positions. It combines different literary styles: classicism and the emerging romanticism, aimed at showing the complexity of the secular circle during the times of serfdom. The play contrasts two positions: the Famusov society, which can only appreciate ranks and years of service, and the young nobleman Alexander Chatsky, who opposes the rigidity and injustice of past generations.
