Honore de Balzac is a great French writer, who, according to Leo Tolstoy's definition, 'at that time, everyone was learning to write like him'. In numerous novels of his 'The Human Comedy', he recreated a colorful, cruel, and multifaceted world, reflecting the life of all classes of contemporary society. The book 'Droll Stories' stands out in Balzac's work. This collection of playful and amusing novellas, stylized after Boccaccio and Rabelais, revives the Gallic liveliness and cheerfulness in contrast to the fashionable melancholic romantic motifs of that time, with the action set in the distant past. Bright, extraordinary plots, descriptions of refined amorous pleasures, incredible adventures, expressive characters (many of whom are real historical figures, including monarchs and libertines), and magnificent humor ensured the enduring popularity of 'Droll Stories' among a wide range of readers, despite the outraged accusations of critics of indecency. This edition includes all of Balzac's 'droll stories', including five stories that were not published during the author's lifetime. The texts are accompanied by selected illustrations by Gustave Dore (1832-1883), whose magnificent, vivid depictions of the characters of 'Droll Stories' have remained unsurpassed.
