Vera Orlovskaya's new book includes two stories: "Mutation" and "Choice," written in different genres, which does not prevent them from being united by one theme - an attempt to comprehend what is happening with the world and with us. In the first story, the action unfolds on a certain planet, which is a mirror image of another, where unexplainable phenomena are observed. The beings inhabiting it, who seem to have forgotten not only their past, their kind, but also themselves, under the influence of an alien will, have plunged into a sleep of reason, the one that gives birth to monsters, because aggression and madness have struck them. The hero of the story, a scientist, tries to protect his planet from such a scenario. Coincidence or analogy? The second story, "Choice," is also built on an analogy, but this time a historical one (100 years separate one hero of the story, born in 1885 in the Russian Empire, from another born in 1985 in the same city). The events of then and now suggest that time has converged at one point. It seems that both the revolution and the Civil War are ongoing. And a strange connection between the heroes is emphasized by some internal rebirth: "He did not remember how he disappeared," and, as a continuation of the Russian destiny inscribed in history itself: "He did not remember how he appeared here in 1985 on Leo Tolstoy Street...". It doesn't matter that one was in Denikin's Volunteer Army, then in exile in Paris, fighting against fascism, and the other lives in our time. And he too makes his choice, fearing to make the same mistake that the other made in that past that haunts him, as if he carries both his life and his own. Everything repeats in this world, but there are constants - it is Russia, no matter what it is called in different times, and us, who always remain Russian, no matter what happens to us.
