Vo Nguyen Giap is the greatest of the generals of the Vietnam War, the organizer of partisan resistance first against the Japanese during World War II, and then against the French and Americans.
Throughout his half-century career, General Giap managed to achieve victories over the most powerful armies in the world. It was he who became the chief architect of Vietnam's victory over the American war machine.
Alongside Mao Zedong and Ernesto Che Guevara, General Giap became one of the three creators of the "classic" guerrilla strategy and tactics.
His theoretical and practical achievements were highly regarded in the West and around the world.
