Military-political dimension of European integration

The monograph examines the genesis of the Western European integration association in its political and military dimensions from a historical perspective. The continuity of France's approach to military-political issues from the late 1950s to the early 1980s, prioritizing national interests, is shown during a qualitatively new stage of political development and the establishment of the Fifth Republic. A complex of objective and subjective factors is presented, which since the early 1980s have contributed to the revitalization and intensification of France's participation in European cooperation in political and military spheres. Special attention is given to the role of President F. Mitterrand, whose real contribution to the development of the military-political direction of European cooperation is most significant. It is concluded that the accumulation of a critical mass of decisions implemented under F. Mitterrand in the military-political sphere in close cooperation with the FRG subsequently allowed progress towards strengthening independent defense capabilities and creating a European defense identity. However, achieving significant progress in creating an autonomous European defense pole has not been successful to date.
