The theme of the book is the history of the Roman Empire during the reigns of the Antonine and Severan dynasties, from the beginning of the rule of the philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius to the death of the usurper emperor Macrinus, with a focus on its military aspect, which is still poorly known to readers interested in history. Why have we chosen this particular period? In our opinion, it was a time of Rome's last serious attempt to maintain its undisputed dominance in the then-known world and, at the same time, the last attempt to preserve the ancient civilization of the Mediterranean as a cultural and political phenomenon. Before that, Rome had no such need, as there were no doubts about its dominance and civilizational progress. Now such doubts have arisen. Rome faced large-scale military attacks that it barely withstood, and the cultural level of the Empire began to decline, although initially not very noticeable to its inhabitants. At the same time, a crisis of worldview began to mature, primarily religious. The ancient religions, which had previously contributed to the development of society, now commanded less respect and sincere belief. Fewer people believed in the ancient gods with their purely human characteristics. Consequently, moral principles and the level of cultural society were also questioned and eroded. The ruling circles of the empire, starting with Marcus Aurelius and his circle of like-minded individuals, tried to stop the barbarian onslaught by military force, preserve the principles of ancient virtue, breathe new life into the dying faith, morals, and customs, but their attempts proved futile. The demoralization of the population, moral breakdowns of the emperors, the decay of the Roman guard and army, the impotence and conformity of the Senate only underscored this. Nevertheless, the Romans were a warrior people, so the purely military and organizational efforts of the Empire yielded the best results in trying to halt the decline. It is precisely these efforts that we want to showcase in this work.
