On the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. Amateur photography occupied an important place in the art of the Third Reich. The ideologists of the Nazi regime have repeatedly emphasized the role of “folk photographers” in the creation of his annals. By the beginning of World War II, the number of compact cameras in Nazi Germany reached 7 million, and many of them took their place in the satchels of the Wehrmacht. The prohibitions on photographing concerned only mass executions and plots that could be used by enemy propaganda, but they were not always strictly respected (even serving death camps) As a result, in 1941-1945 Millions of photographs were taken on the Eastern Front by soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht. You are holding an album of unknown photographs from the battles of the Great Patriotic War and the occupied territory of the Soviet Union. It is based on a unique collection of pictures, collected by historian George Shepelev. Detailed scientific comments reveal photos as a historical source and reveal not always obvious ideological subtexts and messages. The selected pictures are devoted to a wide range of plots: from the fighter policy of the invaders to the daily life of the Wehrmacht, the destroyed cities, burned villages, Jewish ghetto and prisoner of war camps. The book was published by the Russian Military Historical Society
