1944. The Red Army liberates Ukraine. The Nazis are struggling to stay in the captured territory. To lure the advancing Soviet units into a trap, on one of the sections of the front, the Germans will equip false positions. The idea of the enemy is revealed by foot intelligence. But its report is contrary to aerial photography. The operational department of the front assures that there is no ambush and you can advance. To find out the situation is entrusted to Captain Smersh Timofeus Romantsev. He comes to the conclusion: at the front headquarters, someone deliberately distorts the situation. The first suspect is found shot in the front -line forest. Romantsev understands that he is going on the right trace and the traitor is somewhere nearby
