At the beginning of the XX century. The main task of the US Navy was the defense of the North American coast (Japan was considered the main enemy on the Pacific Ocean, and the United Kingdom or Germany in the Atlantic), and the fighting against the leading world naval powers, according to the thought of American military theorists, inevitably had to end in a general battle. That is why scouts were created-special cruisers-reconnaissance for the timely detection of enemy ships and their interception superior forces. Soon after the end of the First World War, the construction of a series of ten ships, called Omaha (Omha), in honor of the largest city of Nebraska, began. During their long service, they were repeatedly modernized (this mainly concerned weapons and radar equipment) The attack of the Japanese caught the “Omakhi” on two theaters of military operations - “Detroit”, “Richmond”, “Concord”, “Raley” and “Trenton” in 1941-1945. They fought on the Pacific Ocean, and in 1944 the time of Atlantic cruisers came. So, the head “Omha” fired at Tunom and supported the largest marine landing in the history of the Mediterranean. In the spring of 1944, the cruiser Milwaukee made a transition from New York to Vaengu (Severomorsk), where he was adopted by the Soviet crew. Under the new name - “Murmansk” - he became part of the USSR Navy, becoming the first cruiser of the Northern Fleet.
