The fighting in the Astrakhan direction of the Great Patriotic War from August 1942 to January 1943 was never the subject of a holistic historical study, which is associated both with the imaginary secondary of the front and with imaginary political taboos, due to the need to affect the so-called Kalmyk question. Meanwhile, we are talking about the site on which the issue of reaching the Volga was resolved, about a huge strip between Dagestan deserts and Stalingrad. By virtue of a number of factors, which are described in detail in the book, the German offensive on Astrakhan was suspended, and the Volga was not cut south of Stalingrad. The corresponding threat was quite real, and the advanced motorized reconnaissance groups of the Germans almost unhindered reached the Volga coast in early September 1942
