The novel "Milished and Offended" (1861) was created by F.M. Dostoevsky in the era of the extraordinary rise of Russian public life, in the era, when the publication of a new literary work was perceived as a socially significant event. Thus, the appearance of the novel was “humiliated and offended” was perceived. After his publication N.A. Dobrolyubov took Dostoevsky the most honorable place in the "humanistic" direction of Russian literature. Much of this novel seemed unusual to readers: a new ethical and social problem was posed to them - the problem of selfishness. Prince Valkovsky, who unfolds his cynical “philosophy of life” on the pages of the novel, was the first in the work of the writer the hero-"-pro ”, the predecessor of a man from the underground, Raskolnikov, Svidrigailov and other heroes of Dostoevsky of the 1860-1870s
