In the book "On the Roads of Chess Battles," Alexander Koblenz, the longtime coach of Mikhail Tal, tells about the first 12 years of the wizard from Riga's chess career, during which he goes from a promising junior to the world champion (1960), and also recounts the rematch match against Mikhail Botvinnik (1961). This classic book was first published in the USSR in 1963, containing 77 games and fragments with the author's notes, his reports from the events, and insider information. Five of Tal's games from the 1960 match and seven from the 1961 rematch are presented. In addition to Botvinnik, Tal's opponents include Bobby Fischer, Vasily Smyslov, Tigran Petrosian, Boris Spassky, David Bronstein, Viktor Korchnoi, Paul Keres, Yefim Geller, Yuri Averbakh, and other chess stars of the 1950s and 1960s. The analysis was verified on a computer and corrected by the International Master Valery Bronznik. Without hindering Koblenz from showing how Tal destroyed opponents in a magical attacking style of chess, Bronznik revealed many new amazing ideas in Tal's games, and the book as a whole serves as a practical guide to combat chess. Grandmaster Alexey Shirov wrote a foreword specifically for the new edition.
