Nadya Alexeeva was born in 1988 in the Moscow region. She studied playwriting and prose at the CWS School of Writing, and her works were published in "Yunost", "Druzhba narodov", and "Novy mir". She was shortlisted for the "Lyubimovka" award and became a finalist for the "Litsey" prize. "Polunoshchnitsa" is her debut novel.
In the spring of 2016, a Muscovite named Pavel travels to Valaam to search for his relatives, uncovering a forty-year-old family history. In the 1970s, there was an orphanage in the monastery on the island where World War II veterans and their families lived out their days. Semen, who dreams of becoming a doctor, finishes school there. His motorboat speeds across Lake Ladoga, stirring up the water, while seals bask on the rocks, and the shore beckons with bonfires, and the surviving war bell tolls. Soon, this world will collapse due to a shot from a Finnish rifle.
