This multi-volume edition of the Diary of the Metropolitan Arseny (Stadnitsky), one of the largest Russian hierarchs of the first half of the 20th century, covers the period from 1880 to 1917. The diary reflects the stages of the spiritual formation of the Vladyka himself, his activities on the field of spiritual education, many years of bishops in Pskov, and then at the Novgorod departments, participation in the activities of the State Council, Holy Synod, the Local Cathedral of the Orthodox Russian Church of 1917-1918. As a scientist-historian, Vladyka testified to the growing of devastating processes in Russian society, both in church and in state and public aspects. The latitude and variety of questions affected in the diary turned it into the encyclopedia of the Russian life of the end of the XIX - early XX century. The second volume of the diary for 1902-1903 is dedicated to the last years of the ministry of the Arseny Bishop in the Moscow Diocese of the Volokolamsky Vicarium and the Rector of the Moscow Spiritual Academy.
