The book is dedicated to the analysis of the peculiarities of historical consciousness and narrative inherent in historiography and philosophy of history in 19th century Europe.

The history of historical thought in the 19th century describes a full circle: from rebellion against the Ironic historical worldview of the late Enlightenment to a return to a similar Ironic worldview on the eve of the 20th century. The classical era of European historical thought from Hegel to Croce represented an attempt to constitute history as the basis for a "realistic" science of man, society, and culture. This realism was supposed to be based on a consciousness liberated from the innate scientism and pessimism of the Irony of the late Enlightenment on the one hand, and from the cognitively irresponsible faith of the early Romantic movement on the other. However, in the works of its most outstanding historians and philosophers of history, 19th century Europe succeeded only in generating a multitude of conflicting "realisms," each of which was equipped with a theoretical apparatus and supported by erudition that did not allow for its claims to be rejected even for preliminary recognition.
