Does the artist, swore allegiance to the criminal power, accomplice in her atrocities? Is he responsible for those murders that are committed by order of his high patrons? The novel "Mephisto" is one of the most famous in the work of the German writer Claus Mann (1906-1949) The eldest son of the Nobel laureate Thomas Mann, the nephew of another outstanding prose writer - Henry Mann, a talented representative of the family, who is considered the most influential in the history of Germany of the 20th century, Klaus Mann was forced to go on exile in 1933, where his novel about society appeared, with an incredible speed rushing in madness. The picture of free Germany in the late 1920s - with the heyday of dance culture, many theaters and cabaret, freedom of speech and a variety of political parties - is replaced by a description of the 1930s - the time of the formation of the dictatorship of Nazism. Culture in New Germany is led by politicians and officials, alien to arts and humanity, the general atmosphere is saturated with fear and betrayal, only one point of view remains true, while the rest are punishable as dissent. The central hero of the novel, actor Hendrick Hefgen, like the famous hero of world literature, whose role he plays on stage, is facing a fatal decision: to gain glory and prosperity, but to lose his own soul. For almost a hundred years, they separate the action of the novel from our days, and the events unfolding on the pages of the book do not lose their significance and relevance. In 1981, director Istvan Sabo shot the film of the same name, the main role in which was played by the brilliant Austrian actor Klaus Maria Brandauer. The picture received the award of the Cannes Film Festival for the script, as well as the Academy Award in the nomination "Best Foreign Language Film"
