Ruins have accompanied humanity throughout its history, but they were not always noticed: those who were not interested in the past simply dismantled the remains of old buildings to construct new ones. In such neglect, ruins persisted for a long time until people came to the conclusion that they, as bearers of historical and cultural information, are an important part of their national identity. In his book, Vladislav Degtyarev suggests using ruins as a philosophical tool, a kind of magical glasses that allow for a clearer examination of certain thought patterns and stereotypes of European culture of the New Time. Ruins always exist in the gap, always fall out of classifications, but that is precisely why they can help us analyze the differences between the past and the present, the natural and the cultural, the authentic and the fake, the whole and the fragmented, the right and the anomalous. Vladislav Degtyarev is a cultural studies scholar and art historian, a senior researcher at the A. I. Herzen Russian State Pedagogical University.
