The work of the remarkable publicist Vladimir Alexeevich Chivilikhin is dedicated to the origins and formation of Russian statehood and culture, to the military exploits and peaceful construction of the Russian people in the early Middle Ages. This book is the concluding part of his many years of work on the novel-essay "Memory". However, according to the author himself, it has independent value and can be considered as a completed work, a kind of culmination of a great journey into Ancient Rus and at the same time reflections on the attitude of contemporaries towards spiritual and historical heritage, on the problems of studying history. With the beginning of perestroika, the novel had a significant influence on the development of public thought, the patriotic movement in Russia, and the creation of the society "Memory". V.A. Chivilikhin was one of the main and consistent opponents of L.N. Gumilev and by all available means sought to debunk the theory of ethnogenesis and the passionarity of his colleague.
