General V.A. Sukhomlinov is one of the most controversial figures in Russian history. A combat officer and participant in the Russo-Turkish War, as well as the closest assistant to the famous military theorist General M.I. Dragomirov, Sukhomlinov had a brilliant military career. At the beginning of the 20th century, V.A. Sukhomlinov was the commander of the Kiev Military District, in 1908 he headed the General Staff, and soon after, in 1909, he became the Minister of War. However, it was hard not to notice that Sukhomlinov was characterized by a certain recklessness. General Brusilov described Sukhomlinov as follows: "...I consider him a man undoubtedly intelligent, quick-thinking, and decisive, but with a superficial and frivolous mind. His main flaw was that he was what is called a 'paper general,' content with the superficial success of his actions and orders." These traits of the Minister of War led to a dire situation in the Russian army during the period of the First World War. In 1915, Sukhomlinov was removed from his position and came under investigation. The trial dragged on for a long time, and the general was sentenced under the Provisional Government, but he ended up under amnesty with the Bolsheviks in the spring of 1918. Strangely enough, the October Revolution not only helped him to save his life but also to gain his freedom and go into exile, while most of his colleagues lost their lives in the flames of revolution and the Civil War. However, the former Minister of War Sukhomlinov never admitted guilt in anything and claimed that he was only slandered by his enemies.
