Dmitriy Sergeyevich Likhachyov (1906-1999) was a world-renowned scholar, outstanding literary critic, and cultural historian who endured many trials of the 20th century. Revolution, the Red Terror, arrest due to a joking telegram, the Solovetsky special purpose camp, war... Witnessing cruelty, suffering, death, Dmitriy Sergeyevich did not lose faith in humanity, in its spirituality and morality. Likhachyov's "Memoirs" is a tale of time, of events of past years, but above all - of the people he encountered along the way, of "whom, perhaps, no one else will ever remember, about whom documents lie."
The book also includes "Letters about Kindness" - a message from the great scholar and wise man to young readers: how to be kind, how to see beauty in the surrounding world and in oneself, how to live life with dignity. Using the simplest arguments, Dmitriy Sergeyevich explains that "following the path of goodness is the most acceptable and only path for a person."
The edition is illustrated with photographs capturing pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg, the life of Solovetsky camp prisoners, the blockade of Leningrad, as well as drawings by Dmitriy Sergeyevich from the "Novgorod Album." The photo afterword includes materials from the family archive of D. S. Likhachyov.
