The memoirs of Grigory Ivanovich Filpson (1809–1883), the general from infantry, the penalty ataman of the Black Sea Cossack army and the chief of staff of the Caucasian army cover the period from the youth of the author to 1847, but their central topic is one of the turning point of the Caucasian War (1835–1847) , coincided with the beginning of the reign of Imam Shamil.
