Countess Maria Eduardovna Kleinmichel was a socialite from the highest circles of the Russian Empire, who lived through the reigns of three emperors and personally knew many individuals who left their mark on history. Starting as a young lady-in-waiting and eventually becoming the elderly hostess of a salon in St. Petersburg, where she warmly welcomed aristocrats, ministers, generals, and diplomats, she became privy to many political secrets. By the time she was over 70 years old, the year 1917 had forever changed life in Russia. Finding herself in exile, Countess Kleinmichel felt it was her duty to write memoirs about the "sunken world" of the Russian Empire, as she had much to remember.
