The spirit of the Middle Ages, the flesh and blood of everyday life, interested L. F. Salzman no less than economic history. If "Life in England in the Middle Ages" is dedicated to the ordinary, then "The Byways of the Middle Ages" pays tribute to all things marginal and exotic. The protagonists of the narrative are alchemists, astrologers, charlatan healers, and criminals. They are accompanied by elephants, dragons, lions, basilisks, griffins, as well as the fearsome Lambton Worm and a white bear gifted to King Henry III, which was "taken to bathe in the Thames so he could have fun and catch fish." There is no distinction between the animals from the royal menageries and the monsters from bestiaries - they occupy equal places in the consciousness of people in the Middle Ages. They are accompanied by exotic goods, mainly luxury items, and exotic travels beyond the civilized world. The author himself said of his work: "This book was written with a specific purpose, but that purpose was not to instruct and educate, but rather to interest and entertain, which is a much higher mission."
