The study of the basic principles of lipid metabolism is the main task of lipidology - the science of violations of the metabolism of lipids and lipoproteins in blood plasma. Among disorders of the metabolism of lipids and lipoproteins, hyperlipidemia is of particular importance, characterized by an increase in cholesterol in blood plasma lipoproteins. In recent years, numerous genetic mechanisms that determine violations of lipid metabolism have been identified.
The practical application of accumulated knowledge in the field of genetics can be implemented using methods of medical and genetic counseling in families with hereditary defects in lipid metabolism.
