This is the third edition of the book, named in the first edition of 2008 "Biology of the Life Life and Station". The new name better corresponds to the results of radical processing, taking into account progress in biology over the past decade. But the basis is still a lecture course for masters in the specialty of "public health care", which was read at the biological and soil faculty of St. Petersburg University. Listeners had different basic biological or medical specialties. Doctors had to resemble the basics of biochemistry in the appropriate angle, biochemists - to introduce the elderly diseases, to show the features of the physiology of neurons that are important for the development of age -related neurological disorders, etc. Without data on the molecular bases of the expression of genes and cell differentiation and proliferation, it is impossible to understand, for example, the value of telomeres in aging. Studies of the principles of redistribution of the body"s resources from anabolism and propagation for self -preservation, which have been preserved in evolution from unicellular to a person, go in parallel with the decoding of genes regulation, on which these balance sheets depend. It is impossible to talk about pathogenesis of age -related mental disorders without taking into account the features of the formation of a tertiary structure of proteins that are important for the formation of amyloid fibrils. Particular attention is paid to quantitative aspects: not only "what and how", but also "how much and how much", not just "more" or "less", but how much is it. Key positions are illustrated by more than a hundred drawings and schemes. The publication is aimed at ensuring that the reader can navigate the sea of current information on gerontology, avoiding both hasty conclusions and speculation and inadequacy the latest biology achievements, not reflected in traditional training courses. It can be useful for readers of any level of training, not only biologists and doctors. Since the emphasis is not on the description of private manifestations of aging, but on their basics, this is not a reference to gerontology, but rather a guide for general biology in a gerontological aspect.
