Bill Shutt, a zoologist, a researcher at the American Museum of Natural History and an honorary professor of biology of the University of Long Island (Campus Liu Post), tells the natural history of human heart and other animals-an exciting history of evolution and scientific progress. The book consists of three parts and begins with a review of the animal world that helps to understand the anatomy of the heart, its functions and evolution. Shutt reveals the secrets of the hearts of insects, horses, worms, giraffes, snakes and lizards, a string of hearts passes in front of our eyes - large, small, cold and even non -existent. Many topics are highlighted - from the circulation of microorganisms to the work of the giant hearts of blue whales, from the peculiarities of the circulatory of the swords to the uniqueness of the fluid flowing through the veins of the Antarctic ice fish. In the second part of the book, Shutt traces the development of medical knowledge about the heart and circulatory system. Particular attention is paid to the pioneers of medicine, which have established many of the modern ideas about the heart and blood circulation (but also codified errors, often curious, who have nomaded from one medical book to another for centuries), such as Galen, ibn al-Nafis, Andreas Vesaliy, Andreas Vesaliy, Andreas Vesali William Harvey. The final part is devoted to the achievements of modern cardiology. It tells about the syndrome of a broken heart, heart transplantation, heart regeneration that can grow in a laboratory from one cell, and also describe the technologies that are now used to study the heart.
