Alexander Dumas wrote his novel in 1840, but in Russian the book was published only after 85 years: Nicholas I banned its publication in Russia due to the description of the events of 1824-1826, including the December uprising.
recreating the history, life and customs of the nobility of St. Petersburg, Dumas relied primarily on the notes of Augusten Francois Grisier, who came to Russia to teach the art of fencing. The plot is based on the love story of Modist Louise Dupui and Count Alexei Annenkov, whose prototypes are Polina Göbble and Decembrist Ivan Alexandrovich Annenkov.
The illustrations of Boris Kosynikov remarkably convey the atmosphere of Russia of the XIX century.
A publication with a round spine, in the block - colored illustrations.
For secondary school age.
The book was published in a series of historical works for children and youth "Tuopmum (clay tablet)"
