The novel “The Teacher of Fencing” is a vivid example of the early prose of the classic of the French adventure literature of Alexander Dumas.
The main character, the French fencing teacher, comes to Russia to teach his skill. The trip falls at a turning point in the life of the country - the end of the reign of Alexander I, the accession to the throne of Nicholas I and the uprising of the Decembrists. Against this large -scale background, the dramatic love story of the young Frenchwoman Louise Dupui and exiled to Siberia for participation in the conspiracy of Count Annenkov unfolds - and the fencing teacher plays an inequal role in her. The life and customs of the Russian Empire of the first half of the 19th century, life in capitals and in provincial towns, imperial balls and bear hunting - all this is a place in travel notes of a French traveler.
