Leopold Koss is a legend of cytopathology. His classical leadership “Cytological diagnosis and its histopathological foundations” first saw the light in 1961 and immediately became a table book for specialists who called it the “Red Book”. The concepts proposed by the author were adopted by cytopathologists around the world. Technical progress in the identification of cells obtained from the bladder and neighboring organs prompted the authors to revise the latest edition, published in 1996. This leadership was illustrated by photographs of cytological drugs prepared using modern technologies.
Along with the description of the rules of the fence and processing of samples, the book traditionally pays attention to the normal picture of the urinary sediment and its features, depending on the method of obtaining samples. Other chapters are devoted to the cytological picture in various pathology of the urinary tract: inflammatory diseases, viral and fungal infections, parasitic pathology, etc. A separate chapter describes the picture in detail with malignant tumors of the bladder and lower urinary tract, affecting the differentiation of cells and stadium of tumors. The final chapter presents modern tests that complement the cytological study. A peculiar highlight of the book is the conduct of parallels between the results of a cytological and histological examination.
