In the atlas, a classification of unstable and stable atherosclerotic lesions in the arteries of the person (aorta, coronary arteries and arteries of the base of the brain) is given. Features of morphological and immunohymic changes in the wall of blood vessels are presented, which lead to the development of inflammatory reactions and the formation of "vulnerable" unstable atherosclerotic plaques prone to ulceration, rupture and subsequent thrombosis. These lesions are the basis of acute coronary syndrome, uniting unstable angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and sudden death. This type of atherosclerotic lesions is of progressive growth and is the cause of the absolute majority of clinical complications of atherosclerosis.
Microscopic changes in tissues and cells detected in a light microscope are presented on color, and ultrastructural changes in black and white photographs. In this work, most modern methods of morphological research were used: histology, immunohympochemistry, transmission and scanning electron microscopy.
