Following the great discoverers, the Europeans moved through the Atlantic Ocean to master and colonize new lands. It soon became clear that there were many treasures in the New World: from silver in the south to expensive furs in the north. Most of the possessions in Central and South America belonged to the Spaniards, the Portuguese took possession of the coast of Brazil, in the north the French and the British fought for Canada. By the end of the XVIII century. Many of the colonies turned into independent provinces of their metropolis, and the United States completely became a separate state
