The interest of specialists and art enthusiasts in the history of Russia's artistic life during the post-revolutionary period has contributed to creating a broad picture of its dramatic events. However, the period of the early 1920s, known as the "storm and pressure," still reveals many gaps. One of these "white spots" is proposed to be explored in his book by historian Mikhail Biryukov. At the center of his attention is the remarkable story of the development of the educational artistic structure - the "Rural Academy" in Mstyora, an ancient center of icon painting. Unprecedented in scale and duration, this provincial educational institution had high authority in the fine arts department of Narkompros and actively collaborated with Vkhutemas. Its establishment was influenced by such diverse artists as Olga Rozanova, Alexander Rodchenko, and Fedor Modorov. The pedagogy of local icon painters and painters of the academic school, who were at the origins of the "Rural Academy," later influenced the avant-garde artists. Viktor Palmov, Anton Lavinsky, Sergey Svetlov, and Viktor Kiselyov brought with them a completely different aesthetic program. As a result of these diverse efforts, many notable artists, sculptors, and architects emerged from Mstyora.
