The novel "Marfa the Settler" by the famous writer, ethnographer, and expert on folk life Dmitry Balashov is dedicated to one of the pivotal events in Russian history - the annexation of Novgorod to the Grand Duchy of Moscow. In his work, the author managed to show how the spiritual and social atmosphere in Russia changed during the period of the brutal civil conflict of 1471-1478.
The 15th century. The rapidly developing Moscow Principality is increasing its influence, actively uniting Russian lands around itself. At this time, the freedom-loving Novgorod decides to align itself with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. One of the main supporters of this alliance and the informal leader of the opposition to Moscow becomes the settler Marfa Boretskaya. The simple Novgorodians, exhausted by tribute payments and the lack of "righteous judgment," have mixed feelings about the idea of aligning with Lithuania but become hostages to the ambitions of the boyar and merchant elite. The book unfolds a broad panorama of events that took place in the life of the city and its surroundings. The reader gets acquainted with representatives of various layers of Novgorod society, hears their disputes about faith, duty, family, and the state. Narrating the dramatic story of the subjugation of Novgorod by the Grand Prince of Moscow Ivan III, the author does not hide his sincere admiration for the internal independence of the Novgorodians, the resilience of their spirit, and their sense of dignity. And the main heroine of the novel - Marfa the Settler - appears before us as an incredibly strong, extraordinary personality.
For older school-age children.
