This book contains articles based on little-known, often for the first time introduced into scientific circulation, documentary material that clarifies significant facts and circumstances of Marc Chagall's creative fate during his Russian period: years of study with Lev Bakst, participation in the activities of Jewish art associations, creative interaction with a wide range of outstanding art figures, such as Abram Efros, Yakov Kagan-Shabshai, Yuliy Engel, Solomon Mikhoels, Alexander Romm, and others. Some articles are accompanied by important archival materials. Of particular interest is the translation (abridged) of the book 'My Life' undertaken in the 1960s, which was distributed as samizdat. The publication, which includes a significant number of rarely reproduced Chagall works (graphics from the 1910s-1920s), is aimed at a wide range of the artist's admirers and lovers of 20th-century art.
