History is not just reading for the idle layman, not a movie that we watch with curiosity or boredom. History is a war in which we are called to participate. The authors of the works of the Izborsk Club explain the most acute conflicts of the current historical consciousness by the fact that there is a fierce battle for the sacred. The interpretation of our past and our civilizational 'self' that ultimately prevails will determine the future destinies of humanity.
The concept of the sacred history and the emerging 'Fifth Empire' presented in the book is not just a theory or a scenario, it is a productive myth and an image of the future worth living and fighting for. The book contains a wealth of information proving the parallel operation in humanity of several competing mechanisms of history management, active and ongoing formation of the picture of the past. These are competing 'messianic projects', eschatological models (images of the end of history), mechanisms of meta-history awakening ancient archetypes, methods of 'psychohistory' as an attempt to seize control of the past in the public consciousness, various techniques of 'deconstruction' of history, including the very real historicide (concealment of many 'moments' of the past).
The book convincingly demonstrates that in the age of atheism and materialism, the war for the sacred has only intensified. Some historical figures (Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Napoleon) appear today in an unexpected light. Conspiracy theories are not dismissed as 'conspiracy theories', but are explained from the perspective of the confrontation of multi-level historical and political centers of power.
