Pavel Petrovich Bazhov (1879-1950) was born in the Urals in the factory settlement of Sysert, in the family of a mining master. He spent his childhood among miners and craftsmen who extracted and processed malachite and mica. After graduating from a theological seminary, he taught Russian language in Yekaterinburg, traveled extensively across the Urals, collecting folk tales, legends, and stories. It was on this material that the famous Bazhov's fairy tales were created, works in which truth and fiction are inseparably intertwined.
"The Malachite Casket" is one of P. Bazhov's most famous fairy tales. This is a story of a little girl's coming of age, the daughter of a renowned miner and craftsman, and her transformation into a proud and independent beauty, favored by the Mistress of the Copper Mountain herself.
