The history of literature development is a much broader concept than one might assume, and much more complex than a first-year philology student could imagine. Every selection of "best books" and "must-read" authors is accompanied by a ruthless cutting off of pearls of thought from the approved norm and "golden standard." Many geniuses, recognized and unrecognized, and masterpieces of world literature are left behind. The books of the "World Classics Books" series are an attempt to expand the established notion of classical books and authors essential for an educated person, offering the reader works about which they either have never heard or are only vaguely familiar with. However, the works presented in the series are, in a way, milestones on the complex path of world literature development, without which it is difficult to form an understanding of various genres, literary schools, and entire epochs of world cultural development.
