The monograph studies the life and work of M. Gorky on the basis of previously unknown archival and library sources, which have become available only in the last twenty years. Delassing various myths and legends that exist in literary criticism of mass press, the author shows the true appearance of Gorky, writer, thinker and man. Moreover, the monograph reveals its role and significance not only in Russian literature of the late XIX - the first third of the 20th centuries, but also in the modern world. In a new way, revealing the complex problems of bitterness, the author concerns the attitude of Gorky to Marxism and Narodniki, his controversy with the Bolsheviks, the reasons for departure and return to his homeland, relations with Stalin and the leaders of the opposition, the secrets of the writer"s death.
