Sergei Dmitrievich Sazonov (1860-1927) became Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Empire in 1910, when Europe was already divided into two union of states hostile to each other and the First World War was approaching. The final design of the Entente (the Anglo-Russian-French military-political agreement) fell to his share. He accepted a note from the hands of the German ambassador about the declaration of the war of Russia. Until his resignation, he was negotiating with the allies in 1916 and tried in every possible way to expand their number. Sazonov described in his memoirs not only relationships with the Entente allies, but also many little -known events: the fight against the strengthening of German influence in the Balkans, secret negotiations with a recent enemy - Japan, involving the Entente of Italy and Romania and much more. He did not leave aside internal problems: the “Polish question”, which was very relevant at that time for Russia, the discord in the supreme power and the intensifying influence of the State Duma, which led to the collapse of the monarchy and to the February Revolution in 1917
