On Nevsky Prospekt, a newly -earned artist, an overseas Basurmann opened a store full of seductive gizmos: hats, shawls, shoes, and also delightful dolls. All this is to attract local girls. And when eleven lovely girls entered the store, walking along Nevsky and interested in a window, he abducted one of them and began to make a doll out of it. And the brainless French head, a sensitive German nose with donkey ears and a tightly stuffed English belly, helped him in this. Nevertheless, difficulties arose.
"- Woe! cried the sorcerer.
- Yes! Woe, ”answered the brainless French head,“ the powder went out of fashion! ”
- This is not the point,? ”Grumbled the English belly,“ I, like an empty bag, are thrown out by the threshold. ”
- even worse,?- the German nose quipped,- they sit on me on horseback, and even spur.
- It"s not right! - objected the sorcerer. - It"s not right! Even worse: Russian girls do not want to become overseas dolls anymore! Here is a real grief! It continues - and the Russians will think that they are really the same people ...
- Woe! Woe! - all the Basurmans shouted in one voice. ""
The story of the insidious sorcerer and Russian girls belongs to the pen Vladimir Fedorovich Odoevsky (1803-1869), the writer, one of the first authors of works written in the mystic and fiction genre. “The fairy tale about how dangerous girls to walk in a crowd along Nevsky Prospekt ", which saw the light in 1833, clearly demonstrates, albeit in a playful form, as representatives of other peoples in a particular country can imagine. In this case, in Russia. At the same time, there is a hint in the story of how, in our opinion, residents of other countries represent us.
Each nation has, in addition to their native language, its own way of life, their traditions, household practices that have developed for centuries. It is not surprising that the traditions and practices of residents of other countries can cause surprise, mockery, and sometimes rejection of those who meet them. Such an acquaintance inevitably gives rise to the image of another people. Nowadays, when people travel a lot, being in almost all countries, a lot in the world has leveled. Nevertheless, national features are preserved. And the inhabitants of the same country develops a certain "typical" image of the inhabitants of other countries. Moreover, such an image reflects not only the culture of another people, but also the culture of the people who gave rise to such a vision of the inhabitants of another country.
Historians and social psychologists call this phenomenon "image of another". Moreover, there are two views on this phenomenon: as representatives of other countries see the inhabitants of some country and how the inhabitants of this country see representatives of other countries. Given how many countries exists in the world and how many centuries should be captured in order to take into account how the “image of another” changed over time, it is easy to understand that the story about this phenomenon is endless. Within the framework of the current main topic, it was decided to limit ourselves to how representatives of other peoples, primarily European, were perceived, subjects of the Russian state in the XVII-XIX centuries. These were diplomats, travelers, people who went to Europe for treatment. And besides this - many nobles who thoroughly got acquainted with foreigners,? - Germans, French, British - who worked for their educators, tutors and governesses.
Articles for the main topic are written by scientists - historians, members of the Russian Society of Intellectual History, which we thank for ongoing cooperation
