This book was prepared and waited in the wings for thirty years. Of course, there is nothing accidental in that it comes out in the year of the 75th anniversary of Victory - without Semyon, Gudzenko cannot be presented to the literature of the Great Patriotic War. Another date is ahead: in 2022, Gudzenko will turn 100 years old.
He was only 21 years old, when the rumor about the new large Russian poet flew around military Moscow, and then the whole country. The classmates and friends called him the most talented of them, and the galaxy of young poets who went to the fronts of the Great Patriotic War was very bright. One has only to name David Samoilov, Yuri Levitan, Alexander Mezhirov, Boris Slutsky, Julia Drunin and many, many others.
The chronology of the poet’s life and work, revealing our book, shows the intensity and richness of his short life. I recall the words of Konstantin Simonov, who lived twice as long, but also who died on the run, who did not have time to complete the begun. He was already heavily sick to his wife: “Do not be upset, but think, because I lived a long longer life than physical, calendar. If every year of the war is considered for three, and some years of testing - for two, then I have been going out for more than 100 years! And a person does not live for so long.
Many of Gudzenko’s plans were not completed and remained in manuscripts and sketches. They are still waiting for their researchers and publishers. Therefore, the book of Semyon Gudzenko, which you are holding in your hands, is not collected works. It is rather a panorama of the sacrificial and noble life of a beautiful and very talented poet
