• This is the story of two maniacs: Angarsky and Tulunsky

• In addition, this is a story about the people who investigated their crimes

Since the mid-1990s, almost every month, the bodies of dead and raped women have found in the small Siberian city of Angarsk. The search for the person who committed these crimes took over 15 years - primarily because few people wanted to look for him. The book of journalist Sasha Sulim is the story of the most bloody killer in Russia and a story about people who professionally sought, found and put in prison serial criminals contrary to inertia and counteracting law enforcement system. This is the answer not only to the question of how they catch maniacs in Russia, but also to the question why they are often not caught at all.

The book includes a full interview with the Angarsk maniac Mikhail Popkov.

To talk with the operative, I first came to Angarsk and immediately realized that the city is an important character in this story.

My main impression of a conversation with Popkov I would formulate this way: the horror is that the most bloody and brutal killer in the modern history of Russia looks like an ordinary person. If he looked somehow threatening, to come to terms with the existence of such people would be much easier.

Using the example of Mikhail Popkov, I wanted to figure out at what moment of life and why a person crosses the line, which is forbidden for most of us. What is pushing him to murder? How does he justify himself internally? How then does it live with this?
