Paula Moderzon-Becker was here: she was friends with Rilke, wandered around the wasteland, wrote children and peasant women, was fond of nudism, kept a diary and became the first artist who decided to be a naked self-portrait. During her life, Paul was not recognized: caustic reviews were written at her exhibitions, and she managed to sell only three paintings - not an example less than her wife, artist Otto Moderzone. The Nazis destroyed part of her works, considering them “degenerative”.
But Paula always had defenders. Among them is the French writer Marie Dareshek, who created a lively and accurate literary portrait of Paula - the story of an unequal struggle of the expressionist with artists of the early twentieth century, the search for her own style, friendship with Klara Westhoff and marriage with Otto Moderzon, her life in Vorpsved and Paris. “To be here is a miracle” enshrines the reputation of the most important figure of modernism behind Paula and sheds light on the difficulties that artists faced on the path to professional recognition
