During the conflict with Sweden, the Moscow state has gained a new capital - St. Petersburg. After the victory, Tsar Peter I adopted the title of the emperor, and his homeland achieved the status of one of the leading powers in Europe. In August 1700, Peter began, without announcement, the war with Sweden, which lasted 21 years. One of the reasons is the personal insulted sense of the Russian ruler, to which the Swedish authorities three years before did not allow the drawings of Riga"s fortifications. The longest conflict in the history of Russia completely changed the geography of the Baltic region and excluded Sweden from among the leading powers of Europe. In the first battle near Narva, the army of Peter I suffered a crushing defeat from the Swedes. This did not embarrass the future emperor. He began the radical reform of the army according to the European model. And despite the outstanding military talents of the Swedish king are obvious and the fact that he was surrounded by the capable General Sweden lost the war. The ruler of Saxony was the main initiator of the war. He was not distinguished by the talents of the commander, like Charles XII, and did not have such will as Peter I. August II betrayed friends, and preferred to spend his time with mistresses. Nevertheless, he was among the winners and survived all his enemies and allies. According to the results of the Northern War, Peter I agreed to pay Sweden an impressive amount. This is a unique case in history when the winner compensates for the loser damage and territorial loss. Only after the Battle of Poltava, 18 thousand Swedish soldiers were in Russian captivity. In total, about 25 thousand people were captured during the war. Some of them have been held captive for more than 20 years. And many never returned home.
