The legendary Turkish writer Sabahattin Ali became a belated triumphal discovery for European literature. In his works, he explored the problems of cultural and ethnic relations through the lives of ordinary people, quickly winning the favor of the literary elite. "Madonna in a Fur Coat" is a poignant "Remarque-esque" love story of Raif Efendi, a descendant of a wealthy Ottoman family who, by fate, becomes a lowly clerk, and the German artist Maria. A significant part of the novel tells the story of Raif Efendi's life in Turkey and Germany, his love for the German artist Maria Puder, and his spiritual quests and torments. The hero's life in Europe unfolds against the backdrop of a masterfully depicted Germany in the period following its defeat in World War I.
