The stories and novellas of Stendhal, the author of the famous novel 'The Red and the Black', often remain in the shadow of his 'major prose'. Nevertheless, he wrote many brilliant novellas, full of movement, with unexpected, energetic endings. In these small works, Stendhal's love for strong and passionate characters is particularly evident, for whom passion is almost irresistible and instantly turns into action, serving as the driving force of the plot, as seen in many novellas of the 'Italian Chronicles' included in this edition. The Chronicles are based on ancient manuscripts from the 16th-18th centuries. In most cases, they are stories of bandits, conspirators, and rebels, intertwined with love, jealousy, and revenge. Some of the Chronicles ('Vittoria Accoramboni', 'The Duchess of Palliano') are fairly accurate adaptations of ancient manuscripts, while others ('Suora Scolastica', 'Excessive Kindness is Fatal') are more freely reworked. Stendhal's works always maintain originality, a unique narrative style, presenting events in a new, dramatic, and captivating light.
