The concept of love in Western cultural tradition is formed by a vast number of interwoven plots. In her monograph, leading American historian of emotions Barbara Rosenwein, professor emerita at Loyola University Chicago, skillfully reconstructs the five most enduring cultural fantasies about love: the union of like-minded individuals, transcendent experience, selflessness, obsession, and insatiable desire. Various sources serve as material for her analysis - from literature and works of art to private letters, memoirs, and epitaphs.
