Many are used to perceiving Orwell only in the context of the dystopian genre, but the novel "Long Live the Ficus!" will introduce you to a different Orwell, a master of psychological realism. Gordon Comstock, the main character of the novel, quit a good job and moved to a bookstore, where he earns half of his previous salary. He hates the consumer society, material values, and the banality of everyday life, symbolized by the ficus plant in the window. In his reaction to the monstrous system, he himself becomes a kind of monster. Comstock goes through a journey of understanding that salvation can be found not in escaping life, but in confronting it. A socially critical novel about an outsider who does not fit into society.
